Joomla powers a lot of small business sites and educational portals — exactly the kind of content that gets scraped. Joomla Copy Protection Pro is the protection layer for it.
What it does
- Right-click and drag-to-save blocking.
- Image hot-link prevention.
- View-source bypass defense.
- Scraper hurdles via on-page obfuscation.
Setup walkthrough
1. Install
Upload via Joomla's Extension Manager. Enable.
2. Whitelist staff roles
Joomla admins and authors need full copy access. Whitelist their user groups before going live.
3. Configure protection level
Same three-tier model as the WordPress version: Light, Standard (recommended), Aggressive. Test after each change with an incognito browser to confirm honest users still have a clean experience.
4. Set up hot-link whitelist
Add your own domains, partner sites, and any social network preview crawlers (Facebook, Twitter/X, LinkedIn) that need to access images for link previews.
Honest expectation-setting
Same as the WordPress equivalent: client-side protection isn't bulletproof, but it stops 95%+ of content theft. Determined humans with DevTools can always extract content from public pages — but almost no theft is from determined humans.
Where it fits in the stack
This is the application-layer defense. Run it alongside Joomla's standard security best practices: keep core and extensions updated, use a strong admin password, restrict admin login by IP at the server level. For the broader case for self-hosted defenses, see why self-hosting is making a comeback.
